A reader asked me to post this comment for her: "Yay for you!!! I loved nursing my babies and was sad when the end came. I can't stand seeing babies hold their own bottles, not being held while feeding themselves. Who knows what it does to a baby's brain being lovingly held while being physically nourished? No studies on that one.

"You're right that there are some women unable to breastfeed but that number is a small percentage of the total.

"It's such a special time...snuggling with your little one, knowing you're giving him or her your best and being 'forced' to take a break from life's busyness several times a day.

"I think God knew what He was doing when he made it that way (of course He did!). Like, 'You'll be tired and need to rest and take breaks; here, I'll give you a good excuse to do so while at the same time you deepen your relationship with your little one and physically give your special little person the absolute best food available.'

"Doesn't get better than that!!!"

I have 8 kids. Seven of them have been exclusively breastfed, most of them until 2 or 3 years old. My oldest, though, was only 4 months old when I got pregnant again and I lost my milk supply. I continued to nurse him through pregnancy, but I was devastated that I had to supplement. I cried so much. My midwife discouraged me from trying to make my own formula, but now that's exactly what I would do if I were in a similar situation. Anyway, I bought an organic cow's milk formula but I had issues getting it after a few months, this was back in 2006. I refused non-organic or soy based formulas and ended up giving my son goat milk for the last couple months of my pregnancy. When he was 13 months old, his brother was born and my first-born happily refused all other forms of food and exclusively breastfed again for a couple of months. He even got fat little baby cheeks again! Since that time I have also been able to donate breastmilk to another mom who needed it.
