Watching my dog have puppies at age 10 made me absolutely fall in love with birth, and the fascination has outlasted both my own birthing years and a decade as a midwife. Congratulations to Serenity and to your entire household!
That must have been amazing -- to watch your dog whelp when you were ten. My friend told me she remembers being a young girl and waking up to three little kittens mewing on the pillow next to her. Her cat gave birth in the night to kittens. She still remembers it like it happened yesterday. Nature is magical, isn't it?
Squeak, squawk, squeak. That's puppy speak for "yes, yes, yes, thank you, thank you, thank you, we're so happy to be here, confused too. Now where did that teat go?!"
That was the number I kept asking and praying for MeeMaw123! I also wanted 1 blondie, 1 black, 2 bridled and 2 golden. We got 1 blondie (he has curly hair and he's a gorgeous feisty little fellow. At least, I think he's a he...); 2 avatars (Goldens with white arrows on their foreheads. They're beyond cute); 1 golden without markings; 2 copper-colored ones (the first born and the last out. But the bigger of those 2 is now almost golden. His coat has lightened up a lot in just 4 days). No little black pup. And, they are all perfect and exactly as they should be.
I think they're beautiful too, Bob! And they are SO squeaky and squawky. Serenity is very patient with their little noises. And she doesn't panic. I was much more anxious as a first-time mom...
"They" just c-sectioned a gorilla and took her baby away. I wrote a story about an elephant whom they sectioned - oh dear God - and it is being published soon (if you want an advanced copy of it, Jennifer, let me know - if not, no worries). Over the past decades, "designer dogs" - who fit into celebrities purses, where continually bred to be smaller and smaller - until the mammas now are so small they can not give birth and "have" to be sectioned. I want to spit and cry at the same time.
This from the woman who started the first cesarean awareness organization on the planet, coined the word and had the first planned VBAC in the USA and who became a midwife to. help women who'd had cesareans to then have home births with their subsequent babies.
Oh my. That is hard to hear ... about the gorilla and the elephant and the designer dogs. When and where will your article be published? (And thank you for your years and years of advocacy on behalf of women having choices in childbirth. One of my favorite stories EVER is about "Aneka"'s home birth VBAC after 3 C-sections. Maybe you read it? I think it was published on CNN. It's been expunged from the internet, unfortunately. I think it came out in 2010. One of the most inspiring articles ever.
Helps the grass grow! according to everyone I talked to in the south who came from a rural background, anyway... I can't stand stepping in dog droppings and I remember losing it when a lady walking her dog let it sh@t in our yard where my kids walked barefoot. But putting it inside bushes seems like a good way to help get nutrients back into the soil. Of course, the quality of the food they eat also affects their droppings. Most people don't realize that dogs and cats should be eating real food, just like humans. And that highly processed corn-laden filler-laden kibble is not really food. Emma Tekstra wrote a great article about this recently on Substack.
Yes! She gets a raw organic free range chicken drumstick a day — or more if she wants more — and chicken feet. She loves raw chicken feet. I also have been grinding egg shells from duck eggs and sprinkling that on her food. Am I missing anything? (I’m writing a post about what she’s been eating. Which includes raw chicken hearts, raw beef kidneys, 4-protein ground meat from the butcher, and all sorts of healthy extras.)
Just be aware, calcium lives not in meat or feet or organs, but in bones (and some in eggshells, which may not be very digestible, esp compared to raw bones). And, it just so happens the calcium/phosphorus balance is perfect in bones! As if it by some intelligent design…
Oh my gosh!! You totally manifested six puppies!! Sorry the color dream didn't manifest, but boy those golden colored puppies sure are a beautiful color of GOLD!! Congratulations on your litter of six gemini puppies. From another gemini to them, welcome to this big old blue marble puppers!! And Congrats Grandma Jennifer!
Thanks for taking the time to read and admire. 😉 I think so too but I am biased. They get cuter by the hour. (And fatter. Now they're all little roly poly-ees with impossibly pudged out bellies.

The guy from SC apparently does not mind stepping in the foul messes and tracking it around.
Neighbor on 1.5 acres, has a handled scooper and is on patrol daily for her two hound.
We like cats much better, they have no such issues.
Those pups are cute.

Just make sure Mama gets PLENTY raw bones! Calcium loss leads to eclampsia, nasty disease.
