I do find a reluctance in me to use a large amount of spices. Part of this is that they are so expensive, particularly the organic ones. Can you recommend a good place to buy high-quality spices in bulk?

I know what you mean. Our local food cooperative, the Ashland Food Coop, has bulk spices and they don't tend to be too expensive. You can also buy in bulk on Amazon but then you have the entire order (and the packaging), which may be more than you want. Organic is more expensive, but it shouldn't be (why is poison-free food a privilege afforded only to the rich?). But getting sick with ____ (fill in the blank with a lifestyle-induced disease) is even more costly. It's a conundrum for sure.

I am trying iHerb, which sells the Frontier brand.

Check back and let us know what you think of iHerb (full disclosure: I've never heard of it.)

Thanks for the info! Spice jars are so pretty when displayed in a spice rack, but don't you think it's best to store them out of the light to preserve the goodness? I have two kitchen drawers full of jars that are alphabetized to make it super easy to find what you're looking for (assuming someone else in the house doesn't mess up my system) and the drawers keep them out of the light.

They really are pretty. But I have them out for easy access. Your way of doing it is likely best, though, Liz. You are right -- I have read that light can degrade the nutrient content of food. Perhaps the answer is to have really cool looking blue glass spice containers or brown glass? Something that protects the plants inside from degradation?
